Sheila Braidwood
From St Peter's Infants' School to Portslade Community College
By Nicola Benge
I must have just started school, I went to St Peters Infants. I remember my dad had a tradesman bike, which had the basket over the front wheel. The odd occasion he would take me to school, I would sit in the basket with my legs dangling over the front of the basket. I don't expect that lasted for long, as even at that young age we use to take ourselves off to school on our own or with friends.
Fishersgate Halt
It was very rare for either parent to either take or pick me from school, unless there was something special on. I used to have to cross over the iron bridge at Fishersgate Halt. When a train came along we used to stand in the steam, unless it was black smoke, when we would get covered in ash etc.
Portslade Community College
Eventually I went to Benfield Juniors and then onto Portslade Secondary Modern for Girls, which of course is now Portslade Community College. I left there 1967, went to work for Sainsburys, until I joined the W.R.A.F in October 1969. But that's another story!
