A Calendar of 'Make Do and Mend' tips

From Heritage Plus in Peacehaven
By Domenico Trillo

In the not-so-distant past, especially in the 1940s and 1950s, people in Britain had to make do with a lot less than we do today. This encouraged them to be less wasteful and more inventive. Where today we might buy something or throw something else away, they would make that same something or find a new use for that something else.

In our environment-conscious times, it is called Reducing, Re-using and Recycling. In the past it was called Make Do and Mend. There are useful lessons to be learned from the past that can save us money, bring satisfaction and by using less resources and reducing waste, help to protect the environment.

This calendar has a few suggestions each month, for ways to use less and waste less. These suggestions were compiled from the memories and experiences of participants in the WRVS ‘Make Do and Mend’ 10-week workshop held in Peacehaven, East Sussex in the Autumn/Winter of 2007.

To view the complete calendar you can download a pdf file of it, by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.
