Bert Williams came to England from Jamaica as a 16 year old in 1960. After a busy working life which most significantly encompassed the RAF and being the NHS Catering Manager in charge of 5 hospitals around Brighton for 27 years, he retired. He has a wife, two children and two grandchildren, a house with a large vegetable garden which he tends enthusiastically but in fact his retirement has allowed him to channel his considerable energy into volunteer work.

Having tried various options, eventually he was encouraged to set up 'Brighton and Hove Black History'. His vision, determination and warmth has helped to make this one of the most important recent social innovations in the city. Moreover, the ripple effect of its outreach can be felt far and wide.
