By Julius Smit
Lewes, East Sussex
Les Harris was born in Newhaven in 1913, and when war came in 1939, Les joined the Home Guard as part of the County Hall detachment in Lewes, based at Pelham House. He soon rose to the rank of Corporal and was stationed in the Air Raid Control section as well as doing fire watching duty, and during this time he saw the first doodlebug fly over Lewes.
In the sound clip, Les Harris talks about a particular incident during his time with the Home Guard.
