Veejay's Story
From Mauritius to Virginia Water
By Veejay
This is short story about myself, my family and growing up.
I was born and bred in Mauritius and we were a family of six, my mother, father, three brothers and the only daughter.
Sadly, my father died when I was nine months old and since then my mother worked hard to bring us up in a way that we were not short of anything which we required as a necessity.
Educated in Port-Louis
I was educated from primary school in the capital of Mauritius called Port-Louis and then secondary school until the age of 16 years. I left school to start learning to sew for four years and then I decided to come to England to do nursing in 1969 in Virginia Water, Surrey. I was on a two year course in a psychiatric hospital.
Married in Wimbledon
I met my husband in 1972 in London and we were married in April 1973 in Wimbledon. Then a few months later I moved to Hastings where my husband did his training in General Hospital.
We have two good children, a boy and a girl who both live in London. My daughter is married with two lovely children - both boys, one aged 3 years 8 months and the other 1 year and 10 months.
Family and friends in Hastings
I retired from work in 1996 due to ill health and recently I had to have operations in both knees for arthritis but they are still not as comfortable as normal knees. I do my best to carry on with my daily routine making the most of my living with the help of family and friends living in Hastings.
