On VE Day I was on the sands at Clacton and on VJ Day I was in Egypt. And in the end we were in a little barracks and they said keep away from the perimeter fence because you'll probably get bombed - and we did.

VE Day in India
Fredrick George Wicks
VE Day I was on leave up in Darjeeling. We were very much helping the local children up there. And the local school arranged for us who were on leave up there to go along to their place and we invited the boys to a football match. We played without any shoes and, of course, they beat us. It was a very nice do altogether. In the evening we had a marvellous meal. An Indian meal sitting on the playing field there. Served up by the teachers and we ate Indian fashion. They gave us a big leaf and the curry and everything was put in the leaf.
