Daphne Walton shares her photos

Daphne brought these photos in to a WRVS Heritage Plus centre in St Leonards for a reminiscence session with Jon Hildreth.

Before the war

Some German boys came to stay at her house in 1938 who were members of a cycling group and were friends with her brother. They were smitten with them, as they were so big and strong, they 'made her go weak at the knees'. Unfortunately she later found out they were Hitler Youth.

Secret war work

Daphne joined the VAD during the war as a way of supporting the war effort after her father was injured at Dunkirk. The VAD was then sent in great secrecy to Australia to do important war work nursing, where she spent the rest of the war until 1945.

Coming home

On the way back on the boat, there were so many injured people on the boat, including Japanese POWs which was a bit hard to deal with.

Two little boys

She eventually came back and got married and now has two lovely boys!
